PRESOLAR GALACTIC MERGER SPAWNED SiC GRAIN MAINSTREAM

چکیده
Introduction: The mainstream SiC grains have presented unsolved puzzles. Whereas their origin in AGB carbon stars seems correct, based on C isotopes and s-process trace elements, the Si isotopes present two dominating puzzles that are quite extreme in the picture [1,2] that chemical evolution of the Galaxy has generated the SiC mainstream correlation line. The first is that most of the donor AGB stars appear to have evolved in higher-metallicity regions of the Galaxy than has the sun [1,3]; and the second is that the correlation line δ(29) vs. δ(30) has slope m= 4/3 rather than unity, the slope expected if the solar Si composition reflects that of the local interstellar medium when the sun was born [1,3]. In this work I present a new dynamics-based interpretation of these puzzles and discuss associated features that are thrown into a new light by it. Mergers: It is widely believed now that galactic mergers played a large role in the growth of the total mass of the Galaxy. I propose that the Si-isotope correlation line is but a two-component mixing line between galactic-disk gas and a satellite galaxy that was cannibalized by the Galaxy about 6.5 Gyr ago. I stress that this is not improbable, but is rather the current view of how much of the Galaxy grew. This mixing occurred along a hydrodynamic stream generated by the gaseous collision of these two earlier galaxies. Fig. 1 illustrates the idea succinctly. I take the upper end of the mixing line in the Si three-isotope

Si and C Isotopes in Presolar Silicon Carbide Grains From AGB Stars
We compare the Si and C isotopic data of presolar SiC grains with predictions of AGB star models computed with a wide range of input parameters The models con rm an AGB star origin for SiC grains of type mainstream Y and Z Cool bottom processing during the AGB phase is required to explain simultaneously the Si and C data for Z grains The Z grain data together with the new models indicate that t...
متن کاملPolytype distribution of circumstellar silicon carbide: Microstructural characterization by transmission electron microscopy
Silicon carbide (SiC) is a particularly interesting species of presolar grain because it is known to form on the order of a hundred different polytypes in the laboratory, and the formation of a particular polytype is sensitive to growth conditions. Astronomical evidence for the formation of SiC in expanding circumstellar atmospheres of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) carbon stars is provided by i...

Introduction: Submicron-to micron-sized grains of SiC originating from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and supernovae (SN) can be ubiquitous in the matrices of primitive chondrites. Previous work has shown that presolar SiC occurs as three fundamental polytypes or stacking sequences (cubic 3C, hexagonal 2H, and one-dimensionally disordered hexagonal structure designated here ∞H) along with ...
متن کاملProbing the Galactic Chemical Evolution of Si and Ti with Presolar Sic Grains
Presolar SiC grains of the types mainstream, Y, and Z are believed to have formed in thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars with a range of metallicity: mainstream grains in stars of close-to-solar metallicity, Y grains in stars of around half-solar metallicty, and Z grains in stars of around one-third solar metallicity. From their Si and Ti isotopic ratios, it is possible to obtain in...

A systematic NanoSIMS isotope imaging study of sub-micrometer phases in interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) has led to the discovery of two presolar grain types that previously were observed only in primitive meteorites. A 350 · 600 nm Al2O3 grain has a large O enrichment and a slight O depletion, as well as a Mg excess due to the decay of extinct Al. Because of its relatively large size and p...
